Allen F. Foley - Author and Poet
What Is A Veteran?
A Veteran – whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve is someone who, at one point in his or her lifetime wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America” for an amount up to, and including his life.
When was the last time you visited a Maine Veteran’s Home bringing with you a freshly baked batch of cookies? Have you ever gone to the VA Hospital, or a Vet Center to talk to Veterans, listen to their stories, imagining the pain in their hearts and wounded bodies, or feeling the smile you might put on their face because you care? Have you ever visited a Veteran’s Cemetery knowing that the men and woman buried there, died believing in America’s Freedom, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness?
“Homeless Veterans in America is a National Disgrace.” And while the Veteran’s Administration is doing the best it can, it was never designed to provide much assistance to homeless Veterans. The VA budget earmarks about $18 million dollars for per diem support for transitional facilities (1/100th of 1% of its budget). Knowledgeable sources believe that 300,000 men and woman who served in American uniform are on our streets tonight.
